boating courses. The Coast Guard Auxiliary has several
education programs that allow the novice as well as the experienced boater
opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge. There are

NAVIGATING WITH GPS
Offered by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Twelve Chicago
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer its
Navigating With GPS (GPS) Class, Friday, May 11th, 2001 at 7:00 P.M. at
Gary Morava Recreation Center (Prospect Heights Park District),
110 West Camp McDonald Road, Prospect Heights, IL 60070.
This is a 1 session, 3 hour lesson course, with a final exam. The
objective of
this seminar is to enable the operator of a recreational small craft to
navigate
safely and efficiently to any destination, using primarily a GPS receiver
and
conventional charts. This seminar will restrict itself only to the
navigational
aspects of GPS. Topics covered will include Electronic Navigation;
Navigation
Fundamentals; Global Positioning System (GPS); Navigation Techniques; Other
Uses
for GPS; GPS Installation Considerations; and Performance Evaluation (of
GPS
Receiver).

BASIC COASTAL NAVIGATION
Offered by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Twelve Chicago
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer its Basic Coastal
Navigation
(BCN) Class beginning Thursday, May 3rd, 2001 at 6:30 P.M. at Holy Name
Cathedral (Frances Xavier Ward School), 751 North State Street, Room # 212,
Chicago.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary requires that eligible students
have
successfully completed either the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary
Boating
Skills and Seamanship course, Sailing Fundamentals course, or the
equivalent of
another basic boating education course to achieve the maximum benefit of
this
class.
This is a 8 session, 2 ½ hour lesson course held on eight consecutive
Thursday
nights, with a final exam held on the last night. The purpose of this
course is
to help students establish a solid foundation in basic piloting procedures.
This course will help each student achieve a working knowledge of the
subject of
navigation. Topics covered will include Introduction to Coastal
Navigation; The
Marine Magnetic Compass; The Nautical Chart; The Navigator's Tools and
Instruments; Dead Reckoning; and Piloting.
Pre-Registration for this class is required. Parking in the Holy Name
Cathedral
parking lot is included.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer its Advanced Coastal
Navigation (ACN) Class beginning on Wednesday, September 5th, 2001 at 6:30
P.M.
at, Holy Name Cathedral (Frances Xavier Ward School), Room # 212, 751 North
State Street, Chicago, IL.
This is a 12 session, 2½ hour lesson course held on twelve Wednesday
nights,
with a final exam held on the last night. The United States Coast
Guard
Auxiliary requires that eligible students have successfully completed
either the
U.S.C.G. Auxiliary basic Boating Skills and Seamanship class, Sailing
Fundamentals class or the equivalent of some other basic boating education
class
in order to achieve the maximum benefit of this advanced class.
Students will
receive a syllabus and overview of the ACN Class at the first session.
The
class will cover various areas of advanced navigation.

Cathedral
parking lot is included.
